Comfort ye, comfort ye my people,
saith your God.
Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem;
and cry unto her,
that her warfare is accomplished,
that her iniquity is pardoned.
The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness:
Prepare ye the way of the Lord,
make straight in the desert
a highway for our God.

Consolate, consolate il mio popolo,
dice il vostro Dio.
Parlate al cuore di Gerusalemme
e gridatele
che è finita la sua schiavitù,
è stata scontata la sua iniquità.
Una voce grida nel deserto:
“preparate la via al Signore,
appianate nella steppa
la strada per il nostro Dio”.

Ev’ry valley shall be exalted,
and ev’ry mountain and hill made low;
the crooked straight
and the rough places plain.

Ogni valle sia colmata,
ogni monte e colle siano abbassati;
il terreno accidentato si trasformi in piano
e quello scosceso in pianura.

And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
and all flesh shall see it together;
for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

Allora si rivelerà la gloria del Signore
e ogni uomo la vedrà,
poiché la bocca del Signore ha parlato.

Thus saith the Lord of Hosts:
Yet once, a little while and I will shake the
heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry
land;
and I will shake all nations
and the desire of all nations shall come.
The Lord, whom ye seek,
shall suddenly come to His temple,
ev’n the messenger of the Covenant,
whom ye delight in: behold, He shall come,
saith the Lord of Hosts.

Dice infatti il Signore degli eserciti:
Ancora un po’ di tempo
e io scuoterò il cielo e la terra,
il mare e la terraferma.
Scuoterò tutte le nazioni
e affluiranno le ricchezze di tutte le genti.
Ecco, io manderò un mio messaggero
a preparare la via davanti a me
e subito entrerà nel suo tempio il Signore,
che voi cercate; ecco viene,
dice il Signore degli eserciti.

But who may abide the day of His coming?
And who shall stand when He appeareth?
For He is like a refiner’s fire.

Chi sopporterà il giorno della sua venuta?
Chi resisterà al suo apparire?
Egli è come il fuoco del fonditore.

And He shall purify the sons of Levi,
that they may offer unto the Lord an offering
in righteousness.

Purificherà i figli di Levi,
perché possano offrire al Signore
un’oblazione secondo giustizia.

Behold, a virgin shall conceive
and bear a son,
and shall call his name Emmanuel,
“God with us”.

Ecco: la vergine concepirà
e partorirà un figlio,
che chiamerà Emmanuele:
“Dio con noi”.

O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion,
get thee up into the high mountain:
o thou that tellest good tidings to Jerusalem,
lift up thy voice with strength.
Lift it up, be not afraid;
say unto the cities of Judah, Behold you God!
Arise, shine, for thy light is come,
and the glory of the Lord
is risen upon thee.

Sali su un alto monte,
tu che rechi liete notizie in Sion;
alza la voce con forza,
tu che rechi liete notizie in Gerusalemme.
Alza la voce, non temere;
annunzia alle città di Giuda: Ecco il vostro Dio!
Alzati, rivestiti di luce,
perché viene la tua luce,
la gloria del Signore brilla sopra di te.

For behold, darkness shall cover the earth,
and gross darkness the people;
but the Lord shall rise upon thee,
and His glory shall be seen upon thee,
and the Gentiles shall come to thy light,
and kings to the brightness of thy rising.

Poiché, ecco, le tenebre ricoprono la terra,
nebbia fitta avvolge le nazioni;
ma su di te risplende il Signore,
la sua gloria appare su di te.
Cammineranno i popoli alla tua luce,
i re allo splendore del tuo sorgere.

The people that walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
and they that dwell in the land
of the shadow of death,
upon them hath the light shined.

Il popolo che camminava nelle tenebre
vide una grande luce;
su coloro che abitavano
in terra tenebrosa
una luce rifulse.

For unto us a Child is born,
unto us a Son is given,
and the government shall be upon
His shoulder,
and His name shall be called
Wonderful, Counsellor,
The Mighty God,
The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Poiché un bambino è nato per noi,
ci è stato dato un figlio.
Sulle sue spalle è il segno della sovranità
ed è chiamato:
Consigliere ammirabile,
Dio potente,
Padre per sempre,
Principe della pace;

There were shepherds abiding in the field,
keeping watch over their flock by night.

C’erano in quella regione alcuni pastori
che vegliavano di notte facendo
la guardia al loro gregge.

And lo the angel of the Lord came upon them,
and the glory of the Lord shone round about them,
and they were sore afraid.

Un angelo del Signore si presentò davanti a loro
e la gloria del Signore li avvolse di luce.
Essi furono presi da grande spavento,

And the angel said unto them, fear not:
for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy,
which shall be to all people; for unto you is born this day
in the City of David, a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Ma l’angelo disse loro: “Non temete,
ecco vi annunzio una grande gioia,
che sarà di tutto il popolo: oggi vi è nato nella città di Davide
un salvatore, che è il Cristo Signore”.

And suddenly there was with the angel
a multitude of the heav’nly host, praising God and saying:

E subito apparve con l’angelo
una moltitudine dell’esercito celeste che lodava Dio e diceva:

Glory to God in the highest,
and peace on earth, goodwill towards men.

Gloria a Dio nel più alto dei cieli
e pace in terra agli uomini che egli ama.

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion,
shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, thy King cometh unto thee!
He is the righteous Saviour,
and He shall speak peace unto the heathen.

Esulta grandemente figlia di Sion,
giubila, figlia di Gerusalemme!
Ecco, a te viene il tuo re.
Egli è giusto e vittorioso,
annunzierà la pace alle genti.

Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened,
and the ears of the deaf unstopped;
then shall the lame man leap as a hart,
and the tongue of the dumb shall sing.

Allora si apriranno gli occhi dei ciechi
e si schiuderanno gli orecchi dei sordi.
Allora lo zoppo salterà come un cervo,
griderà di gioia la lingua del muto,

He shall feed His flock like a shepherd,
and He shall gather the lambs with His arm,
and carry them in His bosom,
and gently lead those that are with young.
Come unto Him, all ye that labour and are heavy laden,
and He will give you rest.
Take His yoke upon you, and learn of Him,
for He is meek and lowly of heart,
and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

Come un pastore egli fa pascolare il gregge
e con il suo braccio lo raduna;
porta gli agnellini sul seno
e conduce pian piano le pecore madri.
Venite a lui, voi tutti, che siete affaticati e oppressi,
ed egli vi ristorerà.
Prendete il suo giogo sopra di voi e imparate da lui,
che è mite e umile di cuore,
e troverete ristoro per le vostre anime.

His yoke is easy and His burthen is light.

Il suo giogo infatti è dolce e il suo carico leggero.

Behold the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world.

Ecco l’agnello di Dio, colui che toglie il peccato del mondo!

He was despised and rejected of men;
a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
He gave His back to the smiters,
and His cheeks to them that plucked off the hair:
He hid not His face from shame and spitting.

Disprezzato e reietto dagli uomini,
uomo dei dolori che ben conosce il patire.
Ha presentato il dorso ai flagellatori,
la guancia a coloro che gli strappavano la barba;
non ha sottratto la faccia agli insulti e agli sputi.

Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows;
He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities,
the chastisement of our peace was upon Him.

Eppure egli si è caricato delle nostre sofferenze,
si è addossato i nostri dolori.
Egli è stato trafitto per i nostri delitti,
schiacciato per le nostre iniquità.
Il castigo che ci dà salvezza si è abbattuto su di lui.

And with His stripes we are healed.

Per le sue piaghe noi siamo stati guariti.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned ev’ry one to his own way.
And the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

Noi tutti eravamo sperduti come un gregge, ognuno di noi seguiva la sua strada;
il Signore fece ricadere su di lui l’iniquità di noi tutti.

All they that see him laugh him to scorn:
They shoot out their lips and shake their heads, saying:

Lo scherniscono quelli che lo vedono, storcono le labbra, scuotono il capo:

He trusted in God that he would deliver him, let him deliver him, if he delight in him.

“Si è affidato al Signore, lui lo scampi; lo liberi, se è suo amico”.

Thy rebuke hath broken His heart, He is full of heaviness.
He looked for some to have pity on Him, but there was no man,
neither found He any to comfort Him.

L’insulto ha spezzato il suo cuore e viene meno.
Ha atteso compassione, ma invano, consolatori, ma non ne ha trovati.

Behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto His sorrow.

Considerate e osservate se c’è un dolore simile al mio dolore.

He was cut off out of the land of the living; for the transgression of thy people was He stricken.

Fu eliminato dalla terra dei viventi, per l’iniquità del mio popolo fu percosso a morte.

But Thou didst not leave His soul in hell; nor didst Thou suffer Thy Holy One to see corruption.

Perché non abbandonerai la mia vita nel sepolcro, né lascerai che il tuo santo veda la corruzione.

Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors,
and the King of Glory shall come in.
Who is this King of Glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.
Lift up your heads, o ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors,
and the King of Glory shall come in.
Who is the King of Glory? The Lord of Hosts, He is the King of Glory.

Sollevate, porte, i vostri frontali, alzatevi, porte antiche, ed entri il re della gloria.
Chi è questo re della gloria? Il Signore forte e potente, il Signore potente in battaglia.
Sollevate, porte, i vostri frontali, alzatevi, porte antiche, ed entri il re della gloria.
Chi è questo re della gloria? Il Signore degli eserciti è il re della gloria.

Unto which of the angels said He at any time: Thou art My Son, this day have I begotten Thee?

Infatti a quale degli angeli Dio ha mai detto: Tu sei mio figlio; oggi ti ho generato?

Let all the angels of God worship Him.

Lo adorino tutti gli angeli di Dio.

Thou art gone up on high; Thou hast led captivity captive, and received gifts for men,
yea, even for Thine enemies, that the Lord God might dwell among them.

Sei salito in alto conducendo prigionieri, hai ricevuto uomini in tributo:
anche i ribelli abiteranno presso il Signore Dio.

The Lord gave the word: great was the company of the preachers.

Il Signore annunzia una notizia: le messaggere di vittoria sono grande schiera.

How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace,
and bring glad tidings of good things.

Quanto son belli i piedi di coloro che recano un lieto annunzio di bene!

Their sound is gone out into all lands, and their words unto the ends of the world.

Per tutta la terra è corsa la loro voce, e fino ai confini del mondo le loro parole.

Why do the nations so furiously rage together, why do the people imagine a vain thing?
The kings of the earth rise up, and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord,
and against His anointed.

Perché le genti congiurano, perché invano cospirano i popoli?
Insorgono i re della terra e i principi congiurano insieme contro il Signore e contro il suo Messia.

Let us break their bonds asunder, and cast away their yokes from us.

Spezziamo le loro catene, gettiamo via i loro legami.

He that dwelleth in heaven shall laugh them to scorn; the Lord shall have them in derision.

Se ne ride chi abita i cieli, li schernisce dall’alto il Signore.

Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; Thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

Le spezzerai con scettro di ferro, come vasi di argilla le frantumerai.

Hallelujah: for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth.
The Kingdom of this world is become the Kingdom of our Lord, and of His Christ;
and He shall reign for ever and ever. King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.

Alleluia. Ha preso possesso del suo regno il Signore, il nostro Dio, l’Onnipotente.
Il regno del mondo appartiene al Signore nostro e al suo Cristo:
egli regnerà nei secoli dei secoli. Re dei re e Signore dei signori.

I know that my Redeemer liveth,
and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth;
and tho’ worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God.
For now is Christ risen from the dead, the first-fruits of them that sleep.

Io lo so che il mio Vendicatore è vivo
e che, ultimo, si ergerà sulla polvere!
Dopo che questa mia pelle sarà distrutta, senza la mia carne vedrò Dio.
Ora, invece, Cristo è risuscitato dai morti, primizia di coloro che sono morti.

Since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

Poiché se a causa di un uomo venne la morte, a causa di un uomo verrà anche la risurrezione dei morti;
e come tutti muoiono in Adamo, così tutti riceveranno la vita in Cristo.

Behold, I tell you a mystery:
we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed in a moment,
in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.

Ecco io vi annunzio un mistero:
non tutti, certo, moriremo, ma tutti saremo trasformati, in un istante,
in un batter d’occhio, al suono dell’ultima tromba;

The trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be rais’d incorruptible,
and we shall be chang’d.
For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

Suonerà infatti la tromba e i morti risorgeranno incorrotti e noi saremo trasformati.
È necessario infatti che questo corpo corruttibile si vesta di incorruttibilità
e questo corpo mortale si vesta di immortalità.

Then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: death is swallow’d up in victory.

Si compirà la parola della Scrittura: La morte è stata ingoiata per la vittoria.

O death, where is thy sting? O grave! where is thy victory?
The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law.

Dov’è, o morte, il tuo pungiglione? Dov’è, o morte, la tua vittoria?
Il pungiglione della morte è il peccato e la forza del peccato è la legge.

But thanks be to God, who giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Siano rese grazie a Dio che ci dà la vittoria per mezzo del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo.

If God be for us, who can be against us? Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect?
It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth?
It is Christ that died, yea, rather, that is risen again, who is at the right hand of God,
who makes intercession for us.

Se Dio è per noi, chi sarà contro di noi? Chi accuserà gli eletti di Dio?
Dio giustifica. Chi condannerà?
Cristo Gesù, che è morto, anzi, che è risuscitato, sta alla destra di Dio e intercede per noi.

Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, and hath redeemed us to God by His blood,
to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory and blessing.
Blessing and honour, glory and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne,
and unto the Lamb, for ever and ever. Amen.

L’Agnello che fu immolato è degno di ricevere potenza e ricchezza, sapienza e forza,
onore, gloria e benedizione.
A Colui che siede sul trono e all’Agnello lode, onore, gloria e potenza, nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.
